Looks like it was a bug in the import process from the old jaiku.com.
Manually fixing the channel descriptions is the best solution since the alternative involves trying to automatically reverse engineer the correct data from a mangled string.

This: http://code.google.com/p/jaikuengine/issues/detail?id=4 suggests it's an artifact of the import process. Could you create a new channel either here or on http://openku.appspot.com/ to see if there's actually a bug in the JaikuEngine code that can be reproduced?
